Removable screen panels are put in a screen enclosure and are taken out if there is a hurricane threat. Removable screen panels are normally placed on the side of a swimming pool enclosure. They look a bit like a very heavy duty window screen. They are placed on the middle wall sections of your enclosure. If you have a pool enclosure in a hurricane zone then you may know about removable screen panels.
It is recommended that if there is a hurricane threat that you remove one section of screen on each side of your screen enclosure to allow the air to flow more easily. If you have a fence around your house or close to other houses then you may not need to take any screen panels out. If you are on the water or have a wide open space behind your house then the wind has more space to gain speed and blow out screens.  For more information about when to cut out any screen panels before a hurricane check out the post and video “Remove Pool Screen Sections for a Hurricane?”.
If you are thinking about installing a removable screen panel in 2-4 of your side wall panels then it will cost 3-6 times more than it would cost to replace that same screen panel with new screen. So, as you can see, you can replace that same screen section 3-6 times for the same price as purchasing a removal panel. The removable screen panels also look a bit odd.
Additionally, the removable screen panels are rather heavy and are difficult for many people to lift out or put back in place. It often takes 2 people to do this.

Rusty Screw Problems in Screen Enclosures

Rusty screws are a common problem in screen enclosures, porches and patios in Florida.  There are several things that cause rust.

Exposure to sun and rain and aging cause problems.  Homes that are close to salt water also rust faster.

The tops/heads of the screw often pop off and that results in a weaker screen structure.

Chlorine causes the biggest problems.  Most people wash their deck or patio with chlorine and that causes the screws to rust much faster.

A partial solution to the chlorine problem is to make sure that you thoroughly rinse the chlorine off the screws and any metal areas afterwards.

Another thing that causes rust is the incompatibility of  metals that touch each other.  The frame is made of aluminum and the screws are made of another type of metal.

You may need to replace some of the screws because of the rust.  There are screws that are more resistant to rust than others but are also more expensive.

Below is a list of some types of materials that screws are made of that are used in building a metal frame screen enclosure, porch or patio.

Zinc

Galvanized

Coatings of various kinds

Stainless Steel – is a mixture of metals that includes various amounts of nickel which is a anti rust metal.  Nickel is not as strong  a metal as steel so the screws cannot be made totally of a softer metal. Therefore, even if you use stainless steel screws, they will eventually rust.

How to Prepare Your Pool For the Summer

Every season there are different things that you need to prepare. If you live in Florida you need to prepare for hurricanes at the beginning of the summer.
Preparing your pool for the swimming season is easy but it does take a little time and preparation.

If you do have a pool enclosure, screen room, patio or  lanai your preparation will include checking to see if there are any tares, rips or holes in the screen.  You will need to repair that section of the screen. You may be able to some of this repair yourself.

You will want to open up your home to enjoy the spring and summer air. Small animals, including cats, dogs, raccoons, snakes and even alligators have been known to get into the pool through a small hole. And of course, you would not want a neighbor child to wonder in and fall into your pool.

Call John for information and service on your pool screen enclosure. Serving the Wellington Florida area.

October Still Hurricane Season

General / Comments Off on October Still Hurricane Season

Remember Hurricane Andrew?  It was the first hurricane of the season and occurred in October.  We remember what a devastating experience that was.  Everything was such a wreck, especially in south Miami and Homestead.

Even though Wellington was not devastated by Andrew, we still were affected. It was very scary for a lot of people. A lot of us went to the devastated area to help out.

So don’t let your guard down just because it seems the worst part of the hurricane season is past.

Refer to the September post for some tips about how to secure your screen enclosure.

There are also other tips in the other posts.

Have a good Halloween.

Repair Pool Screens For Pool Safety

Children are out of school for the summer and ready to take advantage of  all things fun and interesting.  That could include having a swim in your pool.  Keep your pool enclosure screens repaired so as to deter the kids from using your pool for their fun and possibly getting hurt.

Recreational time at public and residential swimming pools and spas is a favorite activity for children and adults all over the country. Whether enjoying pool time with family and friends, exercising, playing water sports, or learning to swim, everyone needs to be mindful of the potential for incidents and drownings in pools and spas.

Each year, nearly 300 children under the age of five drown in residential and public pools and spas. Submersion incidents requiring emergency-room treatment or hospitalization number in the thousands and many victims experience permanent disability, including brain damage.

Few people know of the hidden dangers from drain or suction entrapments. Drains with broken, missing, or faulty covers can entrap hair, the body, limbs, jewelry and clothing, or cause disembowelment/evisceration.
