Removable Screen Panels Are They Worth It?

Removable screen panels are put in a screen enclosure and are taken out if there is a hurricane threat. Removable screen panels are normally placed on the side of a swimming pool enclosure. They look a bit like a very heavy duty window screen. They are placed on the middle wall sections of your enclosure. If you have a pool enclosure in a hurricane zone then you may know about removable screen panels.
It is recommended that if there is a hurricane threat that you remove one section of screen on each side of your screen enclosure to allow the air to flow more easily. If you have a fence around your house or close to other houses then you may not need to take any screen panels out. If you are on the water or have a wide open space behind your house then the wind has more space to gain speed and blow out screens.  For more information about when to cut out any screen panels before a hurricane check out the post and video “Remove Pool Screen Sections for a Hurricane?”.
If you are thinking about installing a removable screen panel in 2-4 of your side wall panels then it will cost 3-6 times more than it would cost to replace that same screen panel with new screen. So, as you can see, you can replace that same screen section 3-6 times for the same price as purchasing a removal panel. The removable screen panels also look a bit odd.
Additionally, the removable screen panels are rather heavy and are difficult for many people to lift out or put back in place. It often takes 2 people to do this.

How to Patch a Hole on Your Screen Enclosure

Posted by JR on July 17, 2016
Screen Repair, Videos / Comments Off on How to Patch a Hole on Your Screen Enclosure

How to put a patch on your screen.   Sometimes you don’t have the time or the money to repair or replace a screen.  This video gives you a simple way to patch the hole in the screen yourself.  This will work if it is on a pool, patio, screen room or lanai screen enclosure.

It will also work on a window screen.  The patch will usually stay on the screen for a long time if the patching is done with everything dry.

You can also use spray glue (get from the hobby store).  You could buy a roll of sticky screen but that does not stay on the screen as long (order this online).

The patch will look rather ugly and tacky but it will keep the bugs out.

Window Screens How to Measure

Posted by JR on June 17, 2016
Window Screens / Comments Off on Window Screens How to Measure

In the spring and fall is a great time to have your windows open to let in the fresh air.  However, you need screens in your windows to keep out the bugs and other unwanted things.

There are many types of windows which leads to many types of window screens.  Window screens are not complicated but there is a lot of information because there are so many types and designs of windows that it seems complicated.

If all you need is to rescreen your old window screen then you can take your old window screen to a place that will rescreen it for you.  Many Ace Hardware stores will do this, some Home Depot and Lowes stores will do it for you and perhaps other places in your area.  Some handymen can do this.  In a large condo or HOA that have a repair department may do it for you. We suggest that you have one screen done at first to make sure it will fit and it is what you want  (if you are having a screen made from your measurements).

There are things to consider when you order a new window screen.

  1. Size
  2. How many screens do you need to have made.
  3. Do you have an existing screen – to use as a guide to measure for the new screen
  4. Is you window screen installed from the outside or the inside.
  5. Is the window frame made of aluminum, vinyl, wood, fiberglass, steel or other material.
  6. The manufacture name, if you can find that out.  (there are more than 100) (each manufacture has many designs) (over 400,000 since 1912)
  7. How old is the window frame.  Manufactures change their designs often.

Sliding Glass Door Screen Repair

Screen Repair, Videos / Comments Off on Sliding Glass Door Screen Repair

Call John at 561-798-3132 in Wellington, Florida for screen repair.

Sometimes your pet or child will accidently run through the sliding screen door and you need to repair it. The door usually has rollers on the top side or the bottom side of the slider door. The rollers make the door much easier to slide. Some slider screen doors do not have rollers.

There are several solutions to getting your screen slider door repaired. You can repair the door yourself (attached is a video). ( ) You can take it to a screen repair shop in your area. In some areas the local Ace Hardware store will repair the slider screen for you if you take it to them. Ace Hardware will also repair and/or build new window screens, in many areas.

If someone gives you a price for repair on the phone, the price does not generally include the repair or replacement of the rollers. There are over 60 types (manufactures) of rollers for screen sliders, so all types are not easily available. There are a few generic type of rollers that will fit more than one make/manufacture of slider. This video will show you how to work on a roller.

When you have someone come to your house to repair something, it will cost more than if you take it to a shop to get it repaired.
If you cannot repair the slider yourself or take it out to be repaired then you can call John at 561-798-3132 if you live in the Wellington Fl area.

October Still Hurricane Season

Posted by JR on October 12, 2011
General / Comments Off on October Still Hurricane Season

Remember Hurricane Andrew?  It was the first hurricane of the season and occurred in October.  We remember what a devastating experience that was.  Everything was such a wreck, especially in south Miami and Homestead.

Even though Wellington was not devastated by Andrew, we still were affected. It was very scary for a lot of people. A lot of us went to the devastated area to help out.

So don’t let your guard down just because it seems the worst part of the hurricane season is past.

Refer to the September post for some tips about how to secure your screen enclosure.

There are also other tips in the other posts.

Have a good Halloween.

Hiring a Contractor / Comments Off on Roof Replacement and Pool Screen Repair

John’s Screen Repair             Wellington, Florida                 561-798-3132

When you are planning to replace your roof and have a pool Enclosure attached to the house, you need to ask your contractor several things.

1. Will your pool Enclosure need to be disconnected from the house at any point before, during or after the roof  is to be  replaced. (If so, is that included in the price).

2. Does any of the facia board that is between the pool enclosure and the house need to be replaced and how much. (Most of the time the pool enclosure needs to be disconnected when the facia is replaced).

3.  It is good to get the total price of everything that needs to be done before you sign for the roof is replaced.

4.  Generally, extra work, such as disconnecting the pool/patio enclosure  or replacing screen is not included in the price of replacing the roof.
